NDRF personnel rescues sick child in Kerala floods

A video of an officer from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) running with a sick child across a dilapidated bridge during flood in Cheruthoni town in Idukki District, Kerala, has gone viral on social media.

The daredevil act of the NDRF personnel was shot by News18 Kerala cameraman Kannan V Prasannan.

Even though there were unconfirmed reports that the brave officer is from Kerala State Electricity Board, the doubts were cleared by News 18 itself with an exclusive interview with the officer.
The interview revealed that the officer was from NDRF team and his name is Kanaya Kumar.
“When I came here, I heard that from the other side of river, we heard that a child needs help to cross the bridge. I didn’t think twice. I went to help,” the officer told the media.
According to News18, the officer was assigned to bring the sick child from the other side of the river and take the child to the hospital, which is some 2kms far away.

As the fifth shutter of Idukki dam was opened a few minutes ago, the river was flowing in full steam to Cheruthoni town.
And the bridge, which the brave officer crossed with the child was about to be submerged.Thankfully, he made it.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were flown into the state last Thursday.

Six flood rescue teams of NDRF were deployed in various flood-affected districts of Ernakulum, Alappuzha, Wayanad Kozhikode and Palakkad, to carry out Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) work.
All teams are fully equipped with lifesaving equipment also armed with modern communication gadgets like QD VSAT, HF & VHF, including satellite phones.

The NDRF team is led by its Sr Commandant Rekha Nambiar, the first woman to head the force.

The National Disaster Response Forces’ (NDRF) 4th Battalion based in Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu is headed by Rekha who joined the force on deputation from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Earlier, Nambiar was commanding the CISF unit deployed for securing the Chennai international airport as the Chief Airport Security Officer (CASO).

The death toll in rain-related incidents rose to 29. Of them, 25 were killed in incidents of landslides and four drowned. The Met department has predicted heavy rains in the worst-affected districts of Idukki and Wayanad for the next three days.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and assured all possible help in rescue and relief operations.

“Spoke to Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan and discussed the prevailing flood situation in the state. I have assured all possible assistance from the Centre to the state government. The relief and rescue ops are going on. MHA is closely monitoring the flood situation,” Singh tweeted.

After a review meeting, Vijayan said as many as 53,500 persons have been shifted to relief camps, mainly in Ernakulam, Wayanad, Palakkad, Idukki and Kozhikode.

When this story is filed, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s visit to the flood affected areas of Idukki, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram has started on a helicopter. Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala are accompanying him.
