At least 34 persons were killed while 155 others rescued after a boat capsized off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, authorities said on Wednesday.

A disaster management official said the number of passengers the ferry was carrying exceeded the maximum authorised capacity, reports Efe news.

The capsize took place late Tuesday. It was enroute to Selayar island. The boat was also carrying 48 vehicles.

The Guardian reported, the latest in a succession of boat tragedies in Indonesia began on the same day that officials called off a search for 164 people presumed drowned when a wooden ferry sank on 18 June in a deep volcanic crater lake on the island of Sumatra.

The Sulawesi ferry, with 139 passengers onboard according to its manifest, began sinking on Tuesday afternoon in rough seas. In a desperate bid to save lives, the vessel’s captain steered it toward shore, grounding it between 200-300 metres from shore.”
