Chennai, August 7: DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has passed away.

A press release from Kauvery hospital where he was being treated since July 28, confirmed the news.

“With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr. M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 6:10 PM. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond.”

“We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide,” the press release added.

Karunanidhi, 94, a five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, had been warded in the hospital located at Alwarpet in the heart of Chennai since July 28 when his blood pressure dipped all of a sudden.

Earlier in the day, Karunanidhi’s son and DMK leader M.K. Stalin met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami along with his family members and senior party colleagues. The meeting took place at Palaniswami’s residence.
