Former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan dies at 80

New Delhi, August 18: Former United Nations secretary-general and Nobel Peace Laureate Kofi Annan has passed away a short illness. He was 80.

A statement was tweeted by his official Twitter account, “It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness”
The family has requested privacy at this time of mourning.

Annan served as secretary-general of the UN from 1997 to 2006 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work in 2001.
